Does Naturally Curly Hair Need Layers?
Women with naturally curly might assume that a blunt hairstyle is their only safe option. They worry their curly hair will end up looking too big, or too puffy on the sides, giving them an unnatural looking triangle shape. If you are resenting your glorious head full of curls, there are effective ways to make your curls feel like like the blessing they are rather than a curse.
When done properly, layers can be very liberating for naturally curl hair!
Layers are having a moment on social media and are most often shown on straight hair clients as a means to de-bulk hair and add movement. But what about curly haired women? Would a layered haircut be effective for them? Yes, layers can be exceptionally great for curly hair.
How to add layers to curly hair?
I consider several factors before I start cutting layers into any hairstyle, such as your curl type, curl pattern and direction, face shape, and the amount of natural volume you have. This helps me determine where to add layers, and at what angle and length, in order to better define your hairstyle - without adding bulk.
Many of my curly haired clients are surprised when I explain what layers can do:
- Improved shape of the overall hairstyle
- Curls appear longer and fuller
- Better movement and more bounce
- Fullness is balanced
Suddenly with the right haircut, we can bring out the unique features of your curls. Whether you’re sporting a short, medium or long hairstyle, your curls will be better defined...even your color will appear revitalized.
Short Curly Hair with Layers
There is a right way and a wrong way to layer short, curly hair. Short curly hair needs to maintain more length at the top for fullness, and reduce any appearance of blunt strands. Some short curly hairstyles that work well are a wavy bob or the angled curly bob.
Shoulder Length Curly Hair with Layers
If you have shoulder length curly hair, the options are practically limitless. We can play with a center part or side part, and create layering around the head to de-bulk and revitalize your curls with a haircut customized to you.
Long Curly Hair with Layers
For long curly layered hair, I will work section by section to bring out the best in your curls. With long hair, I often recommend that some shorter layers are subtly added beneath longer ones, especially around the top of the head. This approach will add more volume where you need it and avoid the triangle look mentioned earlier.
